Public transit information: helping riders find their bus and operators see their network

· 5 min read

For a rider, a bus network is only useful if they can work out which route serves their stop and when the next bus is coming. For the operator, a network is only manageable if they can see how it really behaves. TransitGuide serves both with a public rider surface and an operator cockpit built on the same live data.

The problem: guesswork on both sides

Riders rely on word of mouth and out-of-date signage. Operators publish stops and routes on boards or social media that go stale as soon as a route changes, and have little insight into bunching, long dwell times or missed stops.

A public Discover and Track experience

The public rider site works without an account. Riders can search by route, by stop, or plan a journey between two stops, and the filtering is done on the server so results always match what the operator has published. The live tracking page shows explicit states for a missing route, a restricted one or a network failure rather than an endless spinner, and keeps the last known data on screen if a refresh fails.

QR signage that never goes stale

Stops and routes can be linked from QR signage to public route-detail and transit-map pages that read the same live data. When a route changes, the page behind the QR code changes with it, with no reprinting required.

Alerts for riders and insight for operators

Riders can subscribe to a stop and be alerted when a bus approaches. Operators get fleet analytics, a heatmap and route mining over real trips to see where buses lose time and where actual paths drift from the plan. A contributions module lets suggested stop or route corrections be submitted and reviewed.

The passenger mobile app is still in development, so rider access today is primarily through the web experience.
